Celebrating the science of health and womanhood
SAWISE (South African Women in Science and Engineering) is a dynamic association for all those who support the idea of strengthening the role of women in science and engineering in South Africa.
One of SAWISE’s favourite initiatives is inspiring and encouraging young girl learners to become science literate and to consider following careers in science and engineering. Every year, we have events focussing on this goal and in Women’s month we intensify our efforts.
At the beginning of August, a team from SAWISE and supporters spent several days networking with girls in schools on the West Coast. At the end of August, we will be working with girls from schools in the Cape Town area.
SAWISE has enjoyed a close connection with the Cape Town Science Centre (CTSC) in promoting science among schools and the public for many years. Together , SAWISE and the CTSC are planning an event on 31st August to celebrate Women’s month, the power of young girls to help shape science in South Africa and to thank all the women at the CTSC who daily inspire young woman (and men!) to appreciate the wonders of science and technology.
The theme for our event is “Celebrating the science of health and womanhood” and we will have speakers, demonstrations and exhibits that showcase this focus and its relevance in the lives of the grade 9 learners who will share the morning with us at the CTSC.
